In contrast to adults, ventilation is the most important measure when resuscitating children or in the event of a serious emergency, because chest compressions alone are NOT suitable for children! On the one hand, it is hardly possible for the small organism to survive without ventilation – on the other hand, there is a very high probability that the circulation will be reactivated quickly with ventilation! This makes it all the more important to know a clear course of action in the event of a child emergency where mask ventilation is unsuccessful!

Whenever possible, parents should be allowed to be present during their children’s treatment. On the one hand, they are usually well informed about the children’s previous medical conditions, can give precise details of the children’s weight and are the only way to take a medical history. If parents report that something is wrong with their child, this must be taken very seriously!

It regularly happens that the emergency services are confronted with a report of a condition that is perceived as threatening, from which nothing clear can be derived anamnestically and the child presents completely unrestricted again. Nevertheless, presentation at a pediatric clinic is always necessary.

Of course, in children who present or report abdominal pain, the abdomen must be thoroughly examined and included in the differential diagnoses. In the clinic, sonography of the abdomen is also always required to rule out severe pathology (e.g., even volvulus is often clinically deceptive).
